VW California Event 150 BHP

Dear Rob

Andy, FranceI am still very pleased with van, I have had some great trips away in it, the biggest being the South of France last August for two weeks windsurfing.

As much as I loved my old T25 the T4 is in another league! So well built and effortless to drive long distances. By the way the T25 didn’t sell until September but I held out and got good money for her. As you can see by the photo the van is still looking tip top (notice the stainless side bars) Hope to keep it this way for when I part-ex it with you for a 174 t5 California! Maybe in a couple of year’s time before the mileage creeps up to much.

Hope everything is going well for you.

Regards

Andy

2002 Volkswagen Westfalia 150 BHP Event

Hi Rob,

We are enjoying the Westy. Took her up to the Peak district last week and everything was thrown at her – torrential rain (with the roof up), freezing weather one night and 22 degrees during the day. We slept both upstairs and down, and the dog was happy in the awning. Have enclosed a photo near the River Dove.

Many thanks

Paul Illman, HollandHi Rob,

You really have provided an exceptionally good service and I wish your business well for the future.

We found you on the internet whilst living in Spain and you appeared to have just the vehicle that we wanted. You were extremely helpful at a distance which was much appreciated. When I flew to the UK to inspect the vehicle it was actually better than what I expected based on your full description.

Following an agreed purchase you fitted all the extras that I wanted, delivered the vehicle to my home and kindly sent photos to Spain showing the vehicle in all its glory! This was much appreciated by my wife who had to stay in Spain whilst I had the fun of inspecting the vehicle.

We have now used the VW in Holland for the summer and love it.

Thanks again for all your help and a superb service.

Ann & Ian, ExmoorHi Rob,

Just wanted to say how much we’re enjoying our campervan!  Having been looking on and off for a couple of years, we’re very happy to have found such a perfect one.  After a frustrating few weeks forced to stay in London, we finally managed to get away in it.

The attached photo shows us celebrating on arrival at our first campsite (on Exmoor).  We’ve now had two weekends away and are planning a week in France next month to make full use of the left hand drive.  Thanks very much indeed for guiding us through the process – we very much appreciated the fantastic information and lack of pressure.

Cheers,

Ann & Ian

Hayes Family
1998 Volkswagen Westfalia California

The Hayes Family, FranceJust wanted to let you know how pleased we are with our camper!  We've sold the car, and use the camper for everything now.  We've just come back from 2 weeks in France with our baby Nancy, and it was a complete success.  It is such a pleasure to drive, and so convenient for camping.  We didn't even bother with electric hook-up, the battery lasts so long without it.

Thank you for being so patient with our numerous questions when we were still looking, it really did make the difference in giving us confidence in the purchase.  We'd been to Marquis to look at Auto-Sleepers to make the comparison, and they were so unhelpful and disinterested it was an easy decision to choose Westfalia and VW Camper Sales.

We look forward to many years' VW campering, and will be in touch when we're looking to upgrade!

The family Hayes.

Ultann & Bethan
1999 Volkswagen Westfalia California

Ultann & BethanI spent months looking around for a suitable upgrade to my 1994 VW T4 but despite hours on the internet and countless wasted journeys to view poor quality vans I had found nothing. Whilst camping in St Davids however, what looked like the perfect van pulled up next to us in the campsite. Needless to say it was a VW Westfalia. The only problem was that it was on German plates and the model was unavailable in the UK. A quick search on google later and I found this very site and started to admire the vans in the for sale section. Very quickly one van jumped out at me and I knew I wanted it.

The only problem I now had was that I had found a camper that looked good in the photos,  sounded good on paper, but was situated over five hours away from my home. Given that I wished to part ex my old van  I nearly decided not to even make contact with Rob at VWCamper Sales, as I could not face another long journey to see a van, only to come away empty handed again. I voiced my concerns to Rob and we decided that we would both exchange detailed photographs and come to a verbal agreement on price over the telephone.

Having agreed a price it was with much apprehension that I left at 3 a.m. to travel down to Rob’s premises. I need not have worried. The vehicle that was waiting for me was in astonishing condition for its age and I immediately fell in love with it. I could not believe the condition and quality of the Westfalias that were on offer. Either Rob was finding every “peach” in Germany or we should be ashamed of the way in which we care for our cars in the UK.

Rob was true to his word and confirmed that I had been as honest about the condition of my vehicle as he had been about his and I immediately agreed to the deal. Rob carefully went through all the German history and confirmed everything that had been done to my vehicle during its life in Germany as well as its registration in the UK. Shortly, after a comprehensive demonstration and with brand new roof rack fitted, we were heading back to West Wales.

What a difference the Westfalia made to that journey. I cannot recommend highly enough the quality of these vehicles and would advise anyone wanting a compact camper van to try one. The build quality is far greater than any UK conversion and the 2.5 TDi is so quiet, smooth and easy to drive. It is no different from driving the VW Passat TDi that I owned until recently.

The vehicle was the perfect choice for our lifestyle and we can now transport our kayaks easily and safely, as well as carrying the mountain bikes on the back. I love the thing so much I have even been leaving my Impreza at home on a daily basis as I am having more fun in this.

I cannot recommend Rob and VW Camper Sales highly enough. I took quite a chance to travel the 10 hour round trip to their HQ based upon the word of a man I had never met. From my experience he could not have been more honest or fair and this will definitely be my first port of call when I am ready to upgrade.

That will not be for a long while yet!

Knott Family
1994 Volkswagen Westfalia California

Knott Family PicsWe have previously owned a 1969 VW bay camper and loved it. Unfortunately, when our second child was born, some 9 years ago, we had to sell it due to lack of space. After that, we spent many years camping in tents, but last year (after spending two damp weeks in Cornwall during the summer holidays) we decided we wanted something a bit more adaptable. We spend a lot of time on the West Coast surfing and we researched the various conversions of newer VW campers and settled on Westfalia. The layout is great and the elevating roof version fits in our standard garage, which is exactly what we needed, although we didn’t initially know how we would fit the surf boards to it.

Having decided on the conversion, we started the search for our camper. We bought various camping and caravanning magazines, and searched various campers on the internet. Most of the campers we saw within our budget seemed to have high mileage, or weren’t in great condition.. We started to get very disheartened, but fortunately we came across VWCampersales. After a telephone conversation with Rob, explaining what we were after, Rob advised us that he had a van that matched our requirements. I went to have a look, which is a 300 mile round trip. I wasn’t disappointed; Rob had an extensive range of campers on offer to suit all budgets. The camper Rob had described was ideal and with Rob’s honesty and enthusiasm about the van, the deal was done, and I went back to pick the van up a few days later.

Since then, we’ve used it on loads of occasions; throughout the year, in any weather and at any temperature. Not just for camping holidays, but for weekends surfing and days out. It’s such a convenient conversion which means we can just get up and go! We found a way to fit roof rails to the van and after discussing with Rob, can now fit all the boards on easily.

The van drives extremely well and I prefer the left hand driving position. We have had a couple of minor problems with the diesel heater (turned out to be the glow plug) and leisure batteries (both were the original batteries, one of which started to lose its charge), both problems were down to wear and tear and well outside the six month warranty period. I asked Rob’s advice on both occasions and he was more than helpful; advising me of part numbers and even letting me use parts off another of his vans to identify the parts we needed. This sort of after sales service is not the norm and with Rob’s knowledge on VW and his enthusiasm to keep things genuine, you can’t go wrong - we certainly have no complaints. We use our camper on average every couple of weeks, and wish we could use it more often! This summer we will be touring the West Coast of France for two weeks.

The information and advice we received from Rob prior to and since we purchased the van has been excellent, and we will not hesitate to buy our next van from Rob. We also wouldn’t hesitate to pass on Rob’s details to anyone who is thinking of a VW camper.

Thanks Rob.

Chris Cogan
1997 Volkswagen Westfalia California

Hi Rob

Just thought I'd drop you a quick email to let you know that I got the van home with no problems at all last weekend. I've quickly got back into LHD mode and this afternoon I tried to change gear in the Fabia with my right hand !.

Christopher Cogan, SnowdoniaThis weekend just gone I took it up to the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire for the weekend to give it a proper try out. The bike rack is rock solid and easily the best design I've ever used.

The van performed perfectly and after 100 miles the the fuel gauge had hardly moved, which I was very impressed with ! probably due to driving at a steady 50-60mph.

Everything in the van is easy to use and I'm starting to get into a routine of getting it organised. It's so much more civilized than a tent at this time of year! I used a small fan heater in it on Saturday night as it actually went down to 3deg, this kept the van nice and warm though. When I hooked it up to the electric point on the campsite I didn't realise that you have to twist the plug clockwise to make the connection, so it took me a little while to work out why I had no power!.

It rained all day on Sunday so I had to put the roof down wet before I came home, fortunately today was dry for quite a while so I was able to put the roof up to dry it out. I'm off to Snowdonia North Wales in a couple of week’s time mountain biking.

I'm very pleased with the van and although it was initially over the budget I really wanted to spend, I know that it was worth the extra as I could not have got a better van for less. The condition is amazing for it's age and is a credit to it's former owner.

Many thanks for making my first Westfalia purchase so easy.

Regards

Chris Cogan

Hi Rob

Patrick Adams, Oxwich BayThanks for info on Westfalia web site.  We have ordered the straps direct so hopefully they wont take too long.

Dan the Van doing very well.  Had three days on the Gower for Patrick's birthday.  Weather was great during the day but very stormy at night.  Dan is warm and cosy and we only needed the heater occasionally for about 10 minutes a go.

Photo attached from Oxwich Bay - definitely worth a visit out of season - parked right by the beach!! Will send you something for the website after our three week trip to France in April/May.

Jeffrey Cushion
2000 Volkswagen Westfalia California

Hola Rob,

I thought it was way past time that I got in touch. If you remember I had two weeks in the UK to kit out and get used to the van in September. Jeffrey Cushion, MalagaThat done I set off for Portsmouth fully laden ... two calm nights on the ferry to Bilbao (£255) and hit the roads for Malaga expecting to stop a night at a campsite near Madrid.

The roads were so good and empty and with such good progress made it all the way home the same day in 12 hours, so I never got to sleep in it. I found it great to drive on the open road with that cruise control. It is more effort in towns as expected but I am getting used to that.

The weather has not been so great recently, but I did a trip to Cordoba and at last I have slept a couple of nights in it! All went fine but I think I have gone overboard with the amount of bedding I think I need. I must be in British winter mode.

I am very pleased in all aspects and it has been greatly admired by most friends who will be asking to borrow it next summer.

Thanks for doing a great job and fitting me out with such a nice vehicle. I can see me travelling to new horizons in the spring (well Spain and Portugal anyway) ... where will it all end? Well having found Diesel here at 60p a litre I now have no excuse to stay at home.

Many thanks for your good services, adios!

Jeffrey

Tessa & Annie
1991 Volkswagen Carthago Malibu

It was summer 2006. Our mission was to find a VW campervan capable of motoring across Spain – Europe's second most mountainous country after Switzerland  – for three months in blistering heat.

Tessa & Annie, SpainWe were heading off to write a travel guide and needed a camper that would be reliable, fit our budget, handle the terrain and temperature as well as being comfortable and well-equipped.

Initial searches at various dealerships and through friends turned up some extraordinary looking vans. Some very cheap, some very old but allegedly "in great condition", some online that seemed to be a bargain, some that were way over budget and way over-priced.

Eventually we were swamped with ideas and recommendations but did not feel that any of the advice we were being given was particularly reliable.

Time was running out and we had visions of the project going badly, breaking down and being stranded in a remote village for days on end.

Thankfully a friend then directed us to Rob at VW Camper Sales, who found us a Carthago within just a few days that fitted all our criteria. He assured us that it would do the job and it did, perfectly.

Rob and the advice he gave was just what we needed. He didn't over-sell the van to us he just told us exactly what to expect and – because he knows his stuff – what we would and wouldn't need for the trip. He was a great source of information and incredibly helpful. It would be worth consulting Rob, no matter how far down the sales line you already are, even if it's only for a second opinion.

We had a fantastic three months and because we could camp, got to stay in some of the most beautiful and remote (yes there are some) parts of southern Spain. The van took us everywhere without a hitch.

James Hall
1998 Volkswagen Westfalia California

James Hall, UKAround a year ago I decided I wanted to buy a camper for Surfing Trips in Britain and Europe, I had owned one several years before but then since then there seemed to be a whole lot of different options. For the next six months I searched the Internet, local papers and brought just about every caravanning and camping magazine there was hoping for "my van" to show itself to me. After viewing over 50 vans I came upon Rob at VW Camper Sales and the Westfalia Conversions. Instantly I was hooked.

Rob shared my enthusiasm for camper vans and his knowledge was expert and with Westfalia's excellent build quality and design I knew I had found the right place. I discussed with Rob my long list of Must Haves for the van and the California Coach was ideal. I then waited patiently for any new vans to come in, after a short while Rob gave me a call and said that a van was due in that met most of my criteria and would I be able to view it? I jumped at the chance and within a short time realised that this was the van for me and wanted to take it there and then.

It was explained that the van would need to checked over and serviced, Rob would then ensure the van had an British MOT and was registered with the DVLA before I could take it away. I could not have been happier and when the day arrived for me to collect the van everything was sorted and the whole process was made smooth by Rob.

Since collecting the Van it has covered over 20,000 miles without any problems with us going to Europe several times and ferrying me around this country all in the name of Surfing. VW Camper Sales has been excellent with their after-sales with them providing Servicing for my van and Rob has sourced some hard to find accessories for it as well during his trips abroad. All in all buying a camper van from Rob and his after-sales it has been a great experience and one I would recommend to anyone. Friends of mine have contacted Rob and purchased Westfalia vans after seeing what a truly great camper it is.
