Introducing the Volkswagen T4 Camper Van
Introduced in mid 1990, the Volkswagen T4 came rolling off the factory line to replace the rear rear-engine design of the Volkswagen T3. The versatile VW T4 was launched with four engine choices, two diesel and two petrol engines. Diesel saw the choice of either a 4 cylinder 1.9 diesel (which in 1993 became the 1.9 turbo diesel) or the 5 cylinder 2.4 diesel option. With petrol you could choose the 4 cylinder petrol or the five cylinder engine.
In 1996 a new range of engines was introduced for the Volkswagen T4 along with some vehicle modifications including foam filled one piece bumpers, rear disc brakes, engine and gear box mounting modifications, rotary heater controls and additional special rust proofing treatment.

Volkswagen linked with Westfalia to produce the factory fitted Volkswagen Westfalia range of T4 camper vans. The T4 Volkswagen Westfalia was manufactured only on left hand drive, passenger carrying vehicles. Similar in specification to the Volkswagen Caravelle, the Volkswagen Westfalia is a highly developed factory built conversion camper van. The VW Westfalia benefits from factory fitted sliding windows, safety belt mounting points, rear passenger heating, door pockets and other refinements. Westfalia offered a complete design that included a tested practical sliding bed/seat with seatbelts with an optional (additional) removable seat which can be fitted in the tracks. They also offered a low profile elevating roof keeping the T4 under 2 metres in height. The Westfalia conversion also featured molded vehicle lining which is easy to wipe clean, steel framed storage units and twin swivel cab seats. In the UK the Autosleeper Group manufactured their own Volkswagen camer van model based on the right hand drive VW T4. The solid sided elevating roof model was named the Trooper and high roof variation was named the Trident. Both variations of Volkswagen camper van boasted a similar layout to the Westfalia California model with units along one side and a forward facing bed /seat unit. Bilbo’s (a local manufacturer) also introduced their own Volkswagen T4 camper van range which is available with a side lifting low profile roof and high top. Bilbo’s offer three layout options, there are two with units along one side and the third has a kitchen fitted at the rear. The Bilbo’s Celeste comes fully fitted with the usual camper van trimmings whilst the Bilbo’s Breakaway comes with a slim line unit variation which offers a wider bed seat. The Bilbo’s Nektar is the third in the collection and is fitted with a rear kitchen and two single beds. Reimo, a German based manufacturer, created a distribution network in the UK to sell their German designed Volkswagen T4 conversions. Both the Reimo Lucky and Reimo Miami were multipurpose conversions with a vartiotech sliding bed seat unit and rear hinged low profile elevating roof.
